We Posted on Reddit for GEO and Nothing Happened: Why Seeded Posts Don't Move AI Answers

Reddit posts written to get a brand into AI answers usually don't work, and the marketers who answered this question in 2026 mostly agree why: AI systems lean on what many independent sources say, and twenty posts from one push read as one source. The engine your buyers use may also barely cite Reddit at all. And seeded posts get removed, and a removed thread can't be cited.

This page draws on two threads where marketers described this problem, plus a third where people asked whether Reddit is worth it for GEO at all. How we picked threads and filtered out vendor accounts is on our research method page. Quotes are word for word and linked. Several of the most useful replies came from people who sell AI-visibility tracking, and we flag that each time.

For the broader picture of what generative engine optimization involves, see our GEO playbook. This post covers one failure mode: posting on Reddit and waiting for ChatGPT to notice.

The two threads

An agency asked "We wrote 20 Reddit posts for a startup, but ChatGPT still doesn't cite it. Why?" in r/AskMarketing on 20 July 2026. The posts "answered real buyer questions" and mentioned the brand "only when it made sense". ChatGPT still didn't cite or recommend the client. The thread drew 65 comments.

A founder posted "Found out where AI search is actually pulling recommendations from." in r/EntrepreneurRideAlong on 14 October 2026, describing a chatbot that cited a subreddit with "29 visitors a week". The cited thread "had 3 upvotes and 2 comments" and was a list of companies written by a moderator "who runs one of them". The post got 110 points.

These two stories pull in opposite directions. Twenty careful posts got nothing, while one self-serving list in a dead subreddit got cited. The replies explain most of the gap.

Why the twenty posts didn't move ChatGPT

One push reads as one source

The top reply in the r/AskMarketing thread, at 33 points: "ChatGPT is more likely to surface companies that have strong, independent mentions across multiple trusted websites" (u/Epistodoxic_Gnosis, 20 July 2026). The rest of that sentence adds ranking well in search and "an overall established online presence, rather than repeated mentions from a single source."

Two other replies made the same point more bluntly:

  • "Twenty seeded posts dont move that consensus" (u/ParticularOddDan, 21 July 2026). The same reply said the posts "read as one interested party talking about itself."
  • "Twenty posts that all trace back to one push also reads as a single source" (u/Terrible-Value-tomr, 21 July 2026)

The original poster summed it up in their own reply: "Repeated mentions from one source are not enough. The brand needs independent proof across trusted places." (u/binnyagarwal2411, 21 July 2026).

Nobody engaged with the posts

Several replies pointed at engagement, not volume. "the posts themselves need to attract the attention of redditors and have organic engagement." (u/Real-Veterinarian851, 20 July 2026). Another asked the agency straight out whether the posts had started real discussion or were "just posts for the sake of trying to get found on ChatGPT" (u/_newjoisey, 20 July 2026).

One reply suggested faking that engagement with "multiple accounts (1-30) and some light astroturfing skills". That breaks Reddit's rules, and Reddit says it catches it at scale. In a 6 July 2026 post, Reddit said it is "Revoking nearly 2M inauthentic votes per day" and uses LLMs to catch "coordinated patterns of fake behavior and artificial hype". Our posts on astroturfing and buying accounts and upvotes cover what happens to people who try it.

Wrong threads, wrong subreddits

The third explanation is that the posts went somewhere AI systems don't look. One reply suggested checking whether the posts show up in search at all, and commenting on threads that already rank: search "your target keyword on google with site:reddit.com" (u/razical, 20 July 2026). Someone from Profound, a company that sells AI-visibility tracking, said AI systems treat particular subreddits as the trusted sources for a topic, so posts elsewhere "won't be pulled (regardless of quality)" (u/nick-profound, 20 July 2026). That's a vendor's view, and nobody in the thread tested it.

Timing, and a claim that's half right

The second most upvoted reply (15 points) argued that "chatgpt doesnt scrape reddit in real time" and relies on a training set "that might be months old" (u/the_draconian_be, 20 July 2026). That holds for what a model learned in training. But ChatGPT's search mode fetches pages live, and third-party studies we cover in does ChatGPT cite Reddit found it reading Reddit pages while building answers. So the accurate version is this: new posts can't affect the trained model until the next update, and live search only finds them if they rank.

The engine matters more than the post

A good thread still does nothing for GEO if the engine your buyers use doesn't cite Reddit. In 2026 that changed sharply.

Promptwatch, a company that sells AI-search tracking, published on 18 August 2026 that Reddit held a 3.83% share of ChatGPT citations from 18 July to 7 August, then averaged 0.52% from 14 to 17 August. Its own report calls the size of the drop provisional, because "a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out". For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, its numbers showed a gradual decline rather than a cliff.

In the October r/aeo thread "Is Reddit really worth it for GEO?", two tracker vendors shared their own October tests. Both samples are small and vendor-stated:

  • Hasmord said Google AI Overviews "cited Reddit in 28 of 55 overviews (51%)" across 60 US shopping questions, while "ChatGPT search cited zero forum threads" (u/Otherwise-Cold1298, 25 October 2026).
  • Promvia, which disclosed that it builds a tracker, found Reddit in 60.3% of Gemini answers across 40 questions and in none of ChatGPT's or Claude's (u/woodoo139, 26 October 2026). The same reply said that when the ChatGPT API model it queries switched to gpt-5-mini, Reddit went from 0 of 320 answers to 9 of 40 in the first run, with the caveat "One week only". One model change can move engine-level numbers.

If your buyers mostly ask ChatGPT, these numbers suggest Reddit posts weren't going to show up there in late 2026. If they search Google, the threads that appear in AI Overviews matter more. Our guide on ranking in AI Overviews via Reddit covers which kinds of threads tend to surface.

Why the tiny subreddit got cited anyway

The r/EntrepreneurRideAlong story looks like the opposite lesson: a cynical list in a dead subreddit worked. The replies doubted the finding itself.

  • "Did that source keep appearing across fresh conversations, or was it one response??" and "Save the exact prompt, answer and cited URL, then check whether the recommendation survives a few reruns" (u/iNTheInFern, 15 October 2026)
  • "Cited isn't the same as chosen though." (u/Hungry_Possible_1642, 15 October 2026)
  • "the first survives an update and the second is designed to be killed by one." (u/Calendar_Jarhead, 15 October 2026), comparing a real mention with a manufactured citation
  • "the self-made list works right up until a competitor finds it and screenshots it into a bigger sub" (u/MrGingerSnapped, 15 October 2026)

A low-competition question with one tidy answer can get cited from almost anywhere. That doesn't mean the tactic repeats, and the original poster didn't show that it did.

How to test Reddit for GEO properly

The most useful replies across all three threads described a test, not a tactic. Put together, it looks like this:

  1. Write down 10 to 30 questions your buyers ask. Run each one several times in the engines they use, and log every cited domain. "the answer is a distribution, not a fixed slot, and one no-cite check tells you basically nothing." (u/ParticularOddDan, above)
  2. Check whether Reddit appears at all. If no Reddit thread gets cited for your questions, posting on Reddit won't move those answers. Put the time into review sites, comparisons and your own pages first.
  3. If threads are cited, answer in those exact threads, under your own name and disclosed. One reply in the r/aeo thread said a brand-new thread "almost never makes it in" and that the engines quote the top few comments (u/Will_Wu_Metis, 26 October 2026).
  4. Re-run the same questions every week. Look for your points in the answer text, not only a link.
  5. Measure what you can. One reply noted that ChatGPT adds "utm_source=chatgpt.com" to links it cites, so those visits show up as their own source in analytics, while Google's AI Overviews "mostly blend into normal Google traffic" (u/mantasn, 27 October 2026). Add an open "how did you hear about us?" field to your forms.

Be honest about what you find. Nobody in these threads showed a clean business result from using Reddit for AI visibility. The person who said so most plainly was a vendor, GrowthSpree: "Honest answer: not proven." (u/Ishan_GS, 26 October 2026).

Step 3, finding the cited threads, takes the longest. Our free thread finder searches recent threads on a topic. Our Reddit monitoring app watches the subreddits you pick and drafts replies that you edit and post yourself.

We sell this. Subreddit Marketing runs a white-hat Reddit SEO agency service for funded B2B SaaS, fintech and DTC brands: we find the threads that rank on Google and show up in AI answers for your category, and take part in them inside each subreddit's rules. We don't seed posts from fake accounts, buy upvotes or promise AI citations, because nobody controls those. We don't publish prices: every engagement starts with a call.

FAQ

Why doesn't ChatGPT cite my Reddit posts?

Marketers in 2026 threads gave four reasons. AI answers draw on many independent sources, and a batch of posts from one brand reads as a single source. The posts got little engagement. They sat in threads or subreddits the engine doesn't use for your topic. And according to tracker data, ChatGPT cited Reddit far less after mid-August 2026.

Does Reddit still help with GEO in 2026?

It depends on the engine. In vendor tests shared in October 2026, Google AI Overviews and Gemini cited Reddit often, while ChatGPT search cited little or no Reddit in those samples. Before you invest, check the engines your buyers use with your own questions.

How many Reddit posts do I need for AI visibility?

The threads we read say post count is the wrong measure. Replies pointed instead to independent mentions across many sites, engagement from real users, and a presence in the specific threads AI systems already cite for your questions.
